Syllabus

The NEBOSH IGC is divided into two units IG1 and IG2 which are assessed separately:
IG1 is broken down into four elements made up of the following:
Element 1: Why we should manage workplace Health and Safety;
Element 2: How Health and Safety Management Systems work and what they look like;
Element 3: Managing risk - understanding people and processes;
Element 4: Health and Safety monitoring and measuring.

IG2 is broken down into seven elements made up of the following:
Element 5: Physical and psychological health;
Element 6: Musculoskeletal health;
Element 7: Chemical and biological agents;
Element 8: General workplace issues;
Element 9: Work equipment;
Element 10: Fire;
Element 11: Electricity.

IG1 is assessed by an online Open Book Examination (OBE)
IG2 is assessed by the completion of a Risk Assessment which is uploaded to NEBOSH for external assessment.

  • What kind of people take the NEBOSH International General Certificate?
  • What are the benefits for the organization?

    Many large organizations choose the NEBOSH International General Certificate as a key part of their supervisors’ or management development program.

    You will develop the essential Risk Management skills to create a safe and healthy workplace and, you will have the foundation knowledge to make recommendations to your employer to help them improve Health and Safety Management. Smaller organisations, operating in lower risk environments, often choose the NEBOSH IGC as the appropriate qualification for the manager taking the lead on Health and Safety issues.

  • What is the duration of the course?

    The course duration is ten (10) days. IG1 - 4 Days, IG2 - 6 Days.

  • What does the qualification cover?

    The NEBOSH IGC covers the main legal requirements for Health and Safety, identification and control of workplace hazards and the practical application of this knowledge. The syllabus is mapped according to the International Occupational Standards for Health and Safety.

  • What are the Course entry requirements?

    Previous Health and Safety knowledge or experience is not essential to take the course. You will need to have a good level of English to be able to understand complex concepts and discuss them in your exam.

  • Is the NEBOSH International General Certificate a recognised qualification?

    The NEBOSH IGC is accepted by IOSH, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health as meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for associate membership.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Candidates are assessed with examinations for each of the two NEBOSH IG Units as follows:
    IG1 - Management of International Health & Safety
    IG2 - Risk Assessment

  • Assessment Type

    IG1 - Is an online open book examination - OBE, which will demonstrate the learner’s knowledge of the Health and Safety Management principles covered in Elements 1-4.
    IG2 - A Risk Assessment report carried out in the workplace and uploaded to NEBOSH by the Learning Provider, which will demonstrate the learner’s knowledge of workplace hazards and risks covered in Elements 5-11.

  • Certification

    A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. An additional parchment is issued on the successful completion of both IG1 and IG2.

  • Resits

    If any learner wants to do a re-sit exam following a referral, they can apply for this, and resit the examination on the next available date. The learner can, if they wish, sit on a scheduled revision day if they feel is necessary to help them. Please note that there is a charge for this.

  • Number of participants per course

    The number of participants per course does not exceed 20 learners, to optimize interaction during the course. The typical course numbers are 12-16 learners.
